Ein guter Link! Für mich überraschenderweise macht Dr. Jonathan Samet dort deutlich, dass auch die Klassifizierung 2A ("wahrscheinlich krebserregend") im Gespräch war, sich aber als nicht nicht mehrheitsfähig erwies.

Zumindest verstehe ich folgende Passage aus dem New-York-Times-Artikel so:

The committee declined to label the devices as a “probable,” carcinogen, but the majority agreed with the more limited classification of cellphones as “possibly carcinogenic.”

"probable" war aber wohl eher nicht wirklich diskutabel.

Louis Slesin hat dieser 2A Klassifizierung in seinem Bericht zum IARC-Meeting auch eine Passage gewidmet.

"As the voting went on, people came together and it became clear that the likely decision would be 2B," said Carl Blackman, a member of the IARC panel. "But this was not a sure thing when we arrived in Lyon. Rather it evolved out of a very serious evaluation of the evidence." Blackman is with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in North Carolina.

A few members of the working group said that there was some sentiment on the panel for 2A, but this did not go very far.

In the end there was just one vote against 2B —though there would have been a second if Inskip had stayed longer.

Die Diskussion ging wohl eher um "3" oder "2B". Der maßgebliche Ausschlag für "2B" kam durch die epidemiologischen Studien (Interphone + Hardell Studien). Zusätzlich kam noch "some evidence" für Kanzerogenität von Tierstudien dazu. David McCormick der den Vorsitz der Untergruppe "Tierstudien" hatte, äußerte sich in einem amerikanischen Nachrichtensender so...

And David McCormick, who chaired the subgroup on animal studies, told WTTW, Chicago's public TV station, that his "entire" animal panel was "right on the border" of categories "2B" and "3," that is between "limited evidence" that RF is a possible carcinogen and "insufficient evidence" to make a call. As for himself, McCormick said that he was just over the line into the limited category.
